Meet the Maker

Hi I’m Susan, I created Mad Girl Makes in 2024 after nearly 20 years working in the cosmetics industry for a company known for its bath bombs.

Working for this company for so long helped me gain knowledge and experience of ingredients and get to know people and their skin types. My aim is to create my own products that smell amazing and feel amazing too.

The name Mad Girl Makes comes from a mix of a book called Mad Girl by Bryony Gordon, which is a truthful celebration of life with mental illness and the fact I love a bright colour, my hair included! I am also not afraid to admit that I have my own struggles with mental health issues, dyslexia and AuDHD.

It was during a specific mental health struggle in 2023 that I thought “it’s now or never” to start this business, especially as I turned 40 that year!

Ethics and Values

97% Vegan & Cruelty Free

All but one of the current product range is vegan. I currently use bees wax in my lip balms. All products are tested on humans NOT animals. All my ingredients and packaging are ethically sourced.

Palm and Soy free

I do not use palm oil or soy oil/wax in any of my products as they are really damaging for the environment and for your skin. Even our wax used in our wax melts and candles is coconut wax rather than a soy wax or paraffin wax as it is more sustainable and retains the fragrance oils for longer. Coconut wax also gives a cleaner burn in a candle and you do not get the 'sutting' you would with other waxes.

Sustainable packaging

I chose to use glass bottles and jars rather than plastic as glass is easier to recycle locally than different types of plastic. It is more sustainable and can be reused over again or repurposed in your home. My glass bottles and jars are locally sourced to decrease the environmental impact and carbon foot print.

I use shredded paper and starch based packing peanuts for any deliveries. Any bubble wrap I may use for glass based items is repurposed from the deliveries I get for my raw materials.

Paraben free and Preservative free?

Any solid items such as Lip Balms, Bubble Bars and Bath Bombs are preservative free as they do not require any additives as they have no/low water content. This is the same for candles and wax melts. Salt and sugar are natural preservatives so Bath Tea Bags, Bath Salts and Lip Scrubs are also preservative free.

Oil based products such as Cuticle Oils, Beard Oils, Hair and Body Oils and Eye Lash Serums are also preservative free as they have no added water. Products that have a high water content do require a preservative of some form so it does not go off once in your home. I use the minimum amount allowed and I am always trying to find a natural alternative.

I adhere to cosmetic standards, holding Cosmetic Product Safety Reports approved by a certified Chemist. All products are labelled with ingredients, instructions and uploaded to the UK  government portal (which is a legal     requirement), were called for.

If you are local to the North West of  England you can find me at local Fairs and events through out the year. A list of events is in the events section and on my social media channels.
